The Ultimate Guide to Purchasing a Safe and Legal Fatbike

Veilige Fatbike

Are you looking for a rugged, versatile bike that can handle any terrain? Then a Fatbike might be just what you need! However, be warned: not every Fatbike is safe, legal, and approved for use on public roads. In this guide, you'll learn what to look for when purchasing a Fatbike.

What  is a Fatbike?

A Fatbike is a bicycle with extra-wide tires, typically between 3.8 and 5 inches wide. This design provides better grip and stability on unpaved surfaces like sand, snow, and mud. Fatbikes were originally developed for use in snow, but they have become extremely popular. However, many models sold as Fatbikes do not meet the requirements applicable in Europe.

What to Look for When Purchasing a Fatbike?

If you want to buy a Fatbike, it’s important to pay attention to several factors:

  • Safety: Choose a Fatbike from a reputable brand with high-quality components. Pay attention to features like good brakes, sturdy wheels, and a solid frame.

  • Legality: Many Fatbikes are not permitted on public roads. Opt for a Fatbike that complies with legal requirements, such as a maximum power of 250 watts and a maximum speed of 25 km/h.

  • Approval: For use on public roads, a Fatbike must be manufactured according to various standards and quality requirements.

  • Fit: A good fit is essential for comfortable and safe riding. Consult an experienced bicycle mechanic for the correct size and adjustments.

Where to Find a Safe, Legal, and Approved Fatbike?

Currently, it is quite challenging to purchase a legal and approved Fatbike. The market is flooded with low-quality Fatbikes that are officially not allowed on public roads. The brakes, battery, and motor used in these bikes are of very low quality, and the frame and fork are extremely thin. Many of these models are offered on various online platforms at prices ranging from €600 to €1200 and by bike shops offering lower-end models.

In my previous blog, there is a link to ANWB and Bright, where they provide advice on which brands are safe to use and where you can ensure you are participating in traffic legally.

Dangerous Fatbikes

It is crucial that you participate in traffic on a Fatbike that is insured and built to handle certain speeds. Of course, good brakes are a must!

The Ouxi V8 has recently been officially labeled as dangerous and illegal by the European Commission, serving as a genuine warning regarding all Ouxi models, including the V20 and all relabeled models sold by these manufacturers. Our advice is to stay as far away from these models as possible; not only is the quality far too low, but the motor also has excessive power, putting not only yourself but also other road users at risk on an unapproved, extremely low-quality moped.
