The term “Dutch product” is used more and more in the bicycle industry. But what does it actually mean? And more importantly: is a bicycle that is only assembled in the Netherlands truly sustainably and Dutch produced?
At Astonic, we consciously choose a different path. Not because it is easier, but because it is the right one.
Under current regulations, a bicycle may already be described as a Dutch product when final assembly takes place in the Netherlands.
In practice, this means:
frames may be produced in Asia
welding, painting, and quality checks may happen elsewhere
components can be sourced globally
As long as final assembly happens in the Netherlands, claims such as “Made in the Netherlands” or “Dutch product” are legally allowed.
That may be correct from a legal standpoint.
But it does not tell the full story.
At Astonic, we believe that sustainability, quality, and transparency go beyond final assembly. That is why we deliberately choose full Dutch production of our bicycles and frames.
We do this for four fundamental reasons.
By producing everything in the Netherlands, we maintain complete control over every step:
material selection
frame design and geometry
welding and finishing
quality control
final assembly
We know exactly who makes each part, how it is made, and why.
This level of insight is essential for bicycles that must be safe, reliable, and durable.
Local production means:
employment within the Netherlands
collaboration with Dutch craftsmen and suppliers
preservation of knowledge and craftsmanship
Instead of anonymous mass production, we choose short supply chains, fair labor, and local expertise. That is not only sustainable, but future-proof.
A crucial but often underestimated aspect: material transparency.
At Astonic, we work exclusively with:
high-grade aluminum alloys
materials with known and verified origins
components that meet strict European standards and certifications
In many Asian production chains, full transparency about material composition and consistency is difficult to guarantee. That uncertainty is something we consciously avoid.
We also make deliberate choices when it comes to coating and paint.
Our frames are:
coated in the Netherlands
processed under controlled conditions
free from harmful or unknown toxic substances
In many Asian production environments, it is difficult to verify which chemicals are used during coating processes. For us, that lack of certainty is unacceptable — for the environment, for users, and for the people working with these materials.
For us, sustainability is not only about transport distances or emissions. It also includes:
product lifespan
repairability
long-term safety
transparency throughout the supply chain
A bicycle that lasts 15–20 years, is locally produced, and easy to maintain is inherently more sustainable than a low-cost mass product with a short lifecycle.
By choosing full Dutch production, we are able to guarantee:
quality — because we control every step
safety — because design and materials are fully verified
sustainability — because we know exactly what we produce
transparency — because we have nothing to hide
That is why Astonic deliberately chooses this path. Not because it sounds better in marketing, but because it is substantively better.
Not every bicycle labeled as a “Dutch product” is fully produced in the Netherlands. As a consumer, you deserve to understand that distinction.
At Astonic, we believe true sustainability starts with insight, responsibility, and craftsmanship.
