A Fully Custom-Made Bicycle: What Makes Bespoke Different?

Buying a bicycle can be simple. You choose a model, a frame size, a colour and a few options. A few weeks later, your bike is ready.

A fully custom-made bicycle is created in a completely different way.

It doesn't start with the bicycle. It starts with the person who is going to ride it.

How tall are you? What are your body proportions? How much strength do you have? Do you experience any physical discomfort? How is your balance? Where do you want to ride? And perhaps most importantly: what do you need to feel safe and comfortable on your bicycle?

At Astonic, we use this information to build one bicycle.

Your bicycle.

A bicycle with a handmade frame, geometry tailored to your body and components selected around your individual needs and preferences.

It requires more time and a larger investment than a standard e-bike. But in return, you receive something very different: an exclusive bicycle that doesn't just look special, but feels right every time you ride it.

You can fit a standard bicycle with a different saddle, handlebar or shorter stem. These changes can certainly improve comfort, but they don't change the foundation of the bicycle.

That foundation is the frame.

The relationship between the bottom bracket, saddle, handlebars and wheels plays an important role in determining how you sit on the bicycle and how much control you experience.

That's why we look beyond your height when designing a custom frame.

We consider your inseam, body proportions, arm position, preferred knee angle, riding position, mobility and stability. We also take any physical discomfort and the intended use of the bicycle into account.

The goal isn't to make you fit an existing bicycle.

The bicycle should be made to fit you.

Good ergonomics often go unnoticed.

You sit comfortably. Your hands rest naturally on the handlebars. You don't need to stretch forward. Your knees move comfortably and you can stop without having to think about whether you'll be able to reach the ground.

It sounds simple, but for someone experiencing back, neck, knee or shoulder problems, a difference of just a few centimetres can have a major impact.

That's why we look at the bicycle as a complete system.

Not only the frame, but also:

• handlebar shape and position
• grips
• saddle
• crank length
• wheel size
• suspension
• brake and gear controls

Ultimately, it's the combination of all these elements that determines how a bicycle feels.

One of the options we frequently use on our custom-made bicycles is Enviolo automatic shifting.

The system can be configured to automatically select a suitable gear ratio. When you come to a stop at a traffic light, you don't have to worry about discovering that you're still in a heavy gear when you want to set off again. The system can also adjust the gearing when riding into a headwind or climbing a hill.

For senior riders, people with limited hand function or cyclists who simply want maximum comfort, this can be a valuable addition.

You spend less time thinking about the technology and can focus more attention on the road and your surroundings.

The settings can also be adjusted to suit your strength, preferences and riding style.

A dropper post can also make a significant difference on a custom bicycle.

While cycling, the saddle can remain at the correct height for a comfortable pedalling position. When you want to stop, you can lower the saddle.

This makes it easier to reach the ground with your feet, providing greater confidence when stopping, waiting and setting off again.

For riders who have become less confident after a fall or who experience balance difficulties, this can make an important difference.

It means you don't have to ride with a permanently low saddle just to gain the security of a lower seating position when you need it.

Not every physical issue can be addressed through frame geometry alone.

Riders who are sensitive to impacts through the lower back or who frequently ride over cobblestones and uneven cycle paths, for example, may benefit from a high-quality suspension seatpost.

It absorbs part of the vibration and harder impacts before they are transferred directly through the saddle to the rider.

Combined with the right tyres, tyre pressure, riding position and, where appropriate, a suspension fork, we can create a bicycle that remains comfortable even on longer rides.

And that matters.

Because a comfortable bicycle isn't simply more pleasant to ride.

A bicycle you feel comfortable on is a bicycle you'll want to use more often.

A fully custom-made bicycle cannot be built from an online form alone.

That's why an Astonic custom build includes three fitting appointments.

During the first appointment, we assess your measurements, wishes, intended use and any physical challenges. We don't just look at centimetres; we also look at how you move and what matters to you while cycling.

A second fitting takes place during the production process. This allows us to refine our choices and check whether our design assumptions work as intended in practice.

The final appointment focuses on the finishing adjustments.

The bicycle shouldn't be approximately right.

It needs to be right for you.

These fitting appointments are an important part of the difference between a standard bicycle with a few modified components and a bicycle that has genuinely been built around its rider.

This level of customization takes time.

Our current guideline for a fully custom-made bicycle is approximately 12 months, depending on the complexity of the project and the chosen specification.

That may sound like a long time compared with ordering a bicycle from stock.

But that's not what we're building.

We design, manufacture, fit and assemble a bicycle for one specific rider. Some projects also require considerably more engineering and development than others.

That time investment is part of the product.

Our goal isn't to deliver a bicycle as quickly as possible. It's to build a bicycle you can enjoy riding with confidence and comfort for many years.

A fully custom-made Astonic starts from €6,999.

The final price depends on the chosen specification and the technical solutions required.

This could include automatic shifting, high-quality suspension, specific braking systems, different wheel sizes or other components required to optimize the bicycle for its rider.

We therefore don't see customization as a list of options that should simply be made as long as possible.

Every addition should have a purpose.

Does it improve comfort? Safety? Ergonomics? Ease of use? Does it help someone continue cycling independently for longer?

If it does, it can be a worthwhile investment.

If it doesn't, it doesn't need to be on the bicycle.

Perhaps this is ultimately the biggest difference.

A fully handmade custom bicycle isn't one of hundreds of identical bicycles coming off a production line.

One is built for you.

Your frame dimensions. Your geometry. Your components. Your setup. And, if desired, your own colour and appearance.

That makes the bicycle exclusive, but exclusivity itself isn't our main objective.

What matters is that all these individual choices come together as one complete bicycle.

A bicycle where you don't have to think about your riding position. One that gives you confidence when you stop. One that allows you to ride longer distances without constantly fighting discomfort.

A bicycle that makes you want to ride.

That depends entirely on what you need.

If a standard e-bike fits you perfectly and gives you all the comfort and confidence you need, then you probably don't need a fully custom-made bicycle.

But when a standard bicycle increasingly requires compromises because of your height, body proportions, physical discomfort, balance or specific requirements, the equation changes.

Then the investment is no longer just about buying a bicycle.

It's about how many years you want to continue cycling, how many kilometres you'll ride and how much freedom that bicycle can give you.

A good custom bicycle shouldn't feel special simply because it's different. It should feel special because, while riding it, you almost forget it was custom-made.
