Electric fatbikes: which are legal and which are not?

Rider on a legal fatbike cruising safely on the road.

Electric fatbikes have become a common sight on the streets. With their rugged look, wide tires, and powerful support, they’re popular among all ages. But which fatbikes are actually allowed on public roads – and which are not? Since confusion still exists, we’ll explain the rules clearly.

What is a fatbike?

A fatbike is a bicycle with extra-wide tires (around 10 cm), originally designed for rough terrain like sand, mud, and snow. Thanks to deep treads and wide contact surfaces, they provide excellent grip. While they were initially offroad bikes, they’ve now become popular as everyday transportation.

Most modern fatbikes are electric, equipped with a built-in battery and motor. Unlike a mountain bike, a fatbike offers an upright riding position – making long-distance cruising comfortable and easy.

When is an electric fatbike legal?

Dutch law sets clear requirements for e-bikes and fatbikes:

  • Maximum speed: 25 km/h.

  • Maximum motor power: 250 watts.

  • Pedal assistance only: the motor works only when you pedal.

If your fatbike meets these rules, it is legal to use on public roads.

Non-approved fatbikes

Many fatbikes on the market do not meet these legal requirements. Common issues: speeds over 25 km/h or motor power above 250 watts. Such bikes:

  • Are not allowed on public roads.

  • Lack RDW (type) approval.

  • Are not insured in case of accidents.

Riding one puts you at risk of fines and serious financial consequences if you’re involved in a crash.

Riding unsafe without knowing

Many people unknowingly buy a fast electric fatbike that isn’t road-legal. Thousands of these bikes are on the streets today – uninsured and unsafe. Higher speed and weight make them dangerous on cycle paths.

More power, still limited?

Under current law, fatbikes with more than 250 watts – even if limited to 25 km/h – are not allowed. But this rule could be reconsidered. Extra power can make it easier and safer to transport heavy loads or replace car trips.

Higher torque with a capped speed of 25 km/h could be the ideal sustainable solution for shopping and daily commuting.

Conclusion

If you want to ride safe and legal, always choose an approved electric fatbike with max 250 watts and a top speed of 25 km/h. This way you avoid fines, accidents, and uninsured risks.
