Fatbike and e-bike batteries catching fire – the real issue isn’t charging, it’s quality

Over the past months, e-bike battery fires have been making headlines.
Authorities and insurers share safety tips on charging and storage.
Good advice – but something essential is missing: quality.

The truth about battery fires

The safety of an e-bike starts with its battery.
It’s made up of dozens of cells, connected and monitored by a Battery Management System (BMS). If those cells are poor quality or the connections are weak, things can go wrong fast.

Cheap e-bikes and fatbikes – often priced between €600 and €1,500 – use unbranded cells, weak BMS protection, and low-quality assembly. That combination is dangerous.

The hard reality

Most fires are caused not by how people charge their batteries, but by what’s inside them:

  • Overheating from poor-quality cells.

  • Short circuits due to bad soldering.

  • No protection against overcharging or deep discharge.

Yet most campaigns say only:

“Charge your battery in a shed and use the original charger.”

True, but far from enough.

Pay cheap, pay twice

A cheap e-bike may look like a bargain, but inside it hides serious risks.
Unbranded batteries with low-quality cells can overheat and ignite. Indoors, that can escalate into a major fire within minutes.

Simply put:

“If you buy cheap, you risk your safety for free.”

What to look for when buying
  • Check the battery brand. Choose Samsung, LG or Panasonic.

  • Inspect the BMS. A proper Battery Management System prevents short circuits and overheating.

  • Avoid unbranded imports. Many cheap fatbikes do not meet EU safety standards.

  • Look for warranty. Reliable manufacturers offer at least two years of battery warranty.

Safe charging tips

Quality first, proper use second.

  • Charge at room temperature (10°C–25°C).

  • Use only the original charger.

  • Place the battery on a non-flammable surface.

  • Disconnect once fully charged.

  • Never charge unattended, especially overnight.

The future: honest information

Public safety campaigns should talk about quality, not just charging habits.
A safe e-bike starts with certified components, tested assembly, and responsible production.

Because the truth is:
“Quality costs money — but unsafe batteries can cost lives.”
